Pennsylvania Sees New Record For Largest Lottery Prize Won In State With $516M Mega Millions

The multi-state lottery jackpots are soaring to pre-pandemic levels again, and one of those massive pots was just won in Pennsylvania, though not necessarily by a state resident.

The Pennsylvania Lottery announced Monday that a 7-Eleven in Bucks County sold a winning Mega Millions jackpot ticket worth $516 million in the Friday, May 21 drawing. The ticket matched all five white balls drawn, 6-9-17-18-48, and the yellow Mega Ball 8.

It was the ninth-largest Mega Millions drawings ever. The cash option is $349.3 million, before taxes.

It’s the largest in state history. The winner isn’t yet known and has not stepped forward.

The jackpot started in February. More than 81,600 other PA Lottery Mega Millions tickets won prizes of various amounts in the drawing, according to the Lottery.

Many of those players came from the state’s iLottery, where tickets can be bought online.

Previous massive wins in Pennsylvania

The $516 million win makes history as the largest Mega Millions ticket sold in the Keystone State, since it began selling the tickets in 2010. Previous large Mega Millions wins were a $149 million prize in 2014 and a $153 million prize in 2015, according to the lottery.

A Powerball jackpot worth $456.7 million was hit in Pennsylvania in 2018, second best ever.

The national record remains a $1.58 billion Powerball pot from 2016.

“The Pennsylvania Lottery congratulates the big winner of this historic jackpot, and 7-Eleven for selling the big Mega Millions winning jackpot ticket,” Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko said in a statement. “Thanks to our network of more than 9,600 retailers and players across Pennsylvania, the Lottery is continuing to fulfill its mission of responsibly generating funds for programs that benefit older Pennsylvanians.”

This most recent Mega Millions jackpot run generated $41.5 million in sales in Pennsylvania.
